June 21st Outing - 2017

On a very windy Wednesday morning on June 21, 2017, forty STS SC Chapter Superannuates, family and friends boarded an Excel bus bound for Saskatoon.

The first stop was at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.  They were celebrating National Aboriginal Day.  June 21 is observed as a Statutory Holiday for its Cultural Significance as the summer solstice, and that is a day which many Aboriginal groups traditionally celebrate their Heritage.

There were lots of activities to watch and to take part in:  Indigenous Artists Stage, Traditional Games, 7 Sisters Garden, Archaeology Site, Medicine Walk, Powwow Intertribal dancing, tea and bannock, and visiting the Interpretive Center.

Just a note:  Wanuskewin Heritage Park in a non-profit cultural and historical center of the First Nations.  The site is a National Historic Site of Canada due to the importance of its archaeological resources representing nearly 6000 years of the history of the Northern Plains peoples.  In 2016, it was announced that Wanuskewin intends to seek UNESCO World Heritage designation, which would make it the first World Heritage Site in Saskatchewan.

(UNESCO is The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)

At 2:00pm the Superannuates moved on to the Lawson Heights Shopping Center.  They enjoyed a cup of tea, visiting with friends and did a bit of shopping.

At 4:45pm the Superannuates boarded the bus to travel out to the Barn Playhouse.  It is 25KM north of Saskatoon on Highway 12.  Supper was available from many food booths.  There was a choice of hamburgers, barbeque chicken, soup & pie, perogies and sausage.  There was even a glutten free chicken meal.

The play “Jake and the Kid”, by W.O. Mitchell, started at 7:30pm.  It was funny, hilarious in parts and so good.  At around 10:30 the Superannuates boarded the Excel bus for the last time to travel home.  Bus driver Norm got everyone safely back to Swift Current around 1:00am.

The day was fun, educational and filled with a sense of friendship.  It was a trip that was enjoyed by all that came aboard!
